What is a Housekeeper?

For most busy households Housekeepers are essential people whose help with getting you through your day is invaluable! Housekeepers, live-in or live-out, are the most requested members of staff we are asked to supply.

Anyone who has watched Downton Abbey is going to be familiar with the term Maid! Formal houses used to always have a Ladies Maid, a House Maid, a Kitchen Maid, and Nursery Maid – and even more. Although in the UK we now consider the term ‘Maid’ to be rather old fashioned and not in everyday use. Families coming to the UK from overseas do still use this term as it can be a literal translation from what we call a Housekeeper.

So we do still get asked for a Maid – a Ladies Maid in particular being someone who will look after the Lady of House’s packing and unpacking, wardrobe management and the care of fine clothes – even though it is a role that is now carried out by Housekeepers who have had experience in more formal households.

We have requests for all types of housekeepers, from help for an informal home, to assistance in a fully staffed formal household, and through to country estates, and even jobs to work overseas or travel with their employers.

Housekeepers duties include:

• Cleaning
• Laundry
• Wardrobe management
• Changing bed linen
• Restocking and provisioning for the household

Some of our candidates are also hospitality and hotel trained.
